The Selfishness of Good

Ok, so technically speaking, Abraham Lincoln never actually said this. He quoted it from someone else, but since he was Abraham Fucking Lincoln, he usually gets the credit. Regardless of who said it first, it’s a good quote.

It’s a truism of life. When we do good things, we feel good about ourselves. When we do the right thing, we (either consciously or unconsciously) give ourselves a pat on the back. “Good job, self!” That little pat on the back triggers a release of feel-good chemicals, and those are our favorite drugs. As the meme says, “Serotonin and Dopamine…technically the only two things you enjoy.”

I used to blog about spirituality and new-agey stuff. That was a long time ago, and much has happened since then. Honestly, I don’t know if I still believe in any of that or not. Sometimes I do, but sometimes it seems silly to me. I’m not exactly an atheist, but I don’t know what I believe anymore, or if I even believe at all. I’m undecided, I guess. Make of that what you will. This past year has been extremely difficult for me, and I haven’t felt much support from the supernatural realms. Maybe I never did, and it was all just schizophrenia or some bullshit like that.

But….BUT…even if it was all just mental illness, I still helped a lot of people and spread a lot of goodness through my blog. I miss doing that. I miss making the world a better place. I’ve wanted to get back into blogging for a while now, but I had no idea what to write about. The spirituality stuff seems so fake to me now. I’d feel like I was being dishonest if I tried to write about that again.

I saw the book Good Without God by Greg Epstein on a website the other day, and it clicked. I haven’t read the book, so I have no idea what it’s about, but that title gave me a good idea. I can still help people, and make the world a better place, I just have to leave the spiritual stuff out of it. You don’t need god, or goddess, or yoga, or Buddhist mantras to be a good person. You can be good, and do good, for no reason at all. Do it simply because it makes YOU feel good. Do it for the chemicals, man.

Come with me, and I’ll teach you how to be good for no good reason.
